A Possible Link Between Celiac Disease And Candida Albicans

Comments Off

Celiac Disease, also referred to as CD, is intolerance to gluten which is found predominantly in wheat but is present in other grains such as oats, barley rye and others. It is definitely on the rise for previously only 1 in every 3000 was diagnosed and now it is 1 in every 133.

I most cases of this, gluten damages the small intestine mucosa resulting in the reduced ability to absorb nutrients, leaving the bowel in a state of chronic inflammation and the body depleted of nutrients. Symptoms are very wide range such as chronic fatigue, irritable bowel, constipation, chronic bloating, chronic sinusitis, rashes, itchy skin, chronic muscle pain, allergies, weight gain or loss, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet and dizziness just to name a few.

There is a type of CD that predominately affects the nervous system. It is referred to as gluten ataxia. The symptoms are predominately neurological with little or no gastrointestinal symptoms present. The neurological symptoms of gluten ataxia mimic the symptoms of multiple sclerosis so closely that it should be ruled out when diagnosing MS

There are researchers that suspect a link between Candida albicans (yeast overgrowth) and CD. It is also suspected that irritable bowel syndrome, crohn’s disease and fibomyalgia all stem from Candida albicans. Does that mean that all people diagnosed with CD also have Candida albicans? Researchers believe that it’s certainly worth looking into. I know many people with celiac disease who go on a faithful “gluten free” diet and do not feel much better. For those it would be wise to incorporate a “Candida” diet and take huge amounts of probiotics (acidophilus and bifidophilus).

CD is suspected to be associated with hypothyroid problems, specifically Hashimoto’s disease.

Those with anemia, osteoporosis, diabetes, lactose intolerance or autoimmune illness are more prone to it. Children are also being diagnosed with CD. Children with this disease are prone to osteomalacia.

There are so many symptoms that mimic other diseases; it is important to rule out it. There are blood tests available for it; however many laboratories are using the “old” tests such as; the determination of anti-gliadin antibodies, which has shown to be unreliable. It’s also the one that most insurance company’s cover. The new tests are more accurate and more expensive. These new tests are known as the IgA antihuman tissue transglutaminase and the IgA endomysial antibody immunofluorescence. Another problem with test results is that most people that suspect CD stop eating gluten prior to testing. This alone will create false results because in order for the antibodies to be produced and measured, gluten products must be consumed regularly before testing.

Finally and foremost what do people with CD have to eat? Gluten is everywhere and in everything. It takes much research and planning. Foods such as meats, poultry, fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts are permissible. Some grains are also gluten free such as quinoa, soy, teff, rice, buckwheat and amaranth. Most people with CD are also looking for ready made breads, convenience food and snacks that are gluten free. More companies are realizing this and offering ready made gluten free foods such as breads, pizza dough, cinnamon raison rolls, brownie mixes, cake mixes, pancake mixes, waffles, crispy rice cereal, cream of buckwheat cereal, crackers, chips, butter shortbread cookies, coconut macaroon’s, crispy rice snack bars brown rice pasta, brown rice noodles, various gluten free flours, bouillon cubes and much more. These foods should be consumed in moderation for they are still considered processed. The focus should always be on fresh foods, no matter what diet one chooses to follow.

If you or someone you know doesn’t have insurance to cover the blood tests and suspects CD, merely go on a gluten free diet for a month or so and if symptoms don’t improve then incorporate a “Candida” diet for another month.

What Are the Real Cancer Facts?

Comments Off

Cancer has a terrifying reputation. It has not obtained this reputation by accident. It is a disease that has not yet fully given way to the skills and intelligence of medical scientists. Also, as if the pain caused by the disease is not enough, the treatment for cancer, too, inflicts heavy suffering on the body.

Cancer is a disease characterized by uncontrolled and abnormal cell division. As cancer cells travel through the body by way of the blood stream or the lymphatic system, they spread and destroy tissue. The runaway growth of cells is caused by mutations to the DNA in the cells which makes the cells unable to control cell division. This mutation can be either acquired or inherited. The mortality rate in cancer depends on the type of cancer and where it develops.

Among cancers, lung cancer is the biggest killer, causing up to 3 million deaths every year around the world. It affects the above-50 age group population most. It is one of the most common types of cancers that occur in the Western countries. The main risk factor for lung cancer is smoking. Cigarette smoke, especially, contains several carcinogens. Eighty percent of all lung cancers are caused by smoking. Researchers are beginning to recognize second hand smoke as being a cause of this cancer.

Another carcinogen that could cause lung cancer is asbestos. Malignant cells develop in the pleura in mesothelioma cancer. Diagnosis is difficult with mesothelioma cancer. One reason is that the symptoms of mesothelioma cancer occur only 30-50 years after the exposure to asbestos. Second, the symptoms of asbestos cancer, such as shortness of breath and chest pain, are similar to those of many other medical conditions.

The report of mesothelioma cancer has increased in the last twenty years. Still it is considered a relatively rare form of lung cancer, because the incidence rate is only 1 per 1,000,000 people. By contrast, the incidence of lung cancer is 1,000 per 1,000,000.

Radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy are common treatments for asbestos cancer. However, the conventional treatment methods have not been very successful in the case of asbestos cancer, yielding only a short survival rate of 6-12 months after the presentation.

Again, surgery does not have much effect on small-cell lung cancer. Radiofrequency ablation is a treatment for mesothelioma cancer that has recently become more popular. This technique is especially effective in destroying the cancerous cells inside the tumors. These cells are ‘cooked’ by inserting a small heat probe into the tumor. This technique is also non-toxic and causes very little pain for the patient.

New techniques of treatment are being developed, such as molecular targeted therapies, for lung cancer. Better and more effective therapies can be expected as scientists and researchers coax out more secrets from the human cells.

Treating Crohn’s Disease With Nutritional Change

Comments Off

It should be understood that Crohn’s Disease can not be cured or treated with nutritional change. Food intake or allergies also do not cause Crohn’s Disease. However, after the disease is present, certain foods may aggravate the effects of Crohn’s and may be eliminated to reduce side effects.

There is no special diet Crohn’s sufferers should follow. For the most part, you should monitor your diet and the results of such on your body. One way of doing this is by utilizing a food diary in which you log such information. This way, you can keep track of any negative effects certain foods may have. Furthermore, the part of your intestine that is affected by Crohn’s may determine how your body reacts to certain foods and these results may change as time goes by.

Certain diets are being advertised as being effective in treating Crohn’s disease, such as “The Specific Carbohydrate Diet”. However, diets that make such claims are only supported by testimonials and have no scientific support. This should be considered in the validity of the diet. However, certain claims of the diet may be accurate, such as reducing gas and bloating by eliminating hard to digest foods. It should be understood that while certain side effects of the disease may be reduced, it does not actually lessen inflammation or cure the disease.

However, there are certain factors that should be kept in mind in regards to Crohn’s Disease and nutrition. One of which is malnutrition. Due to inadequate food intake, poor absorption, and a combination of diarrhea and vomiting, sufferers often do not have proper nutrient levels in their body. Therefore, special care should be taken to either take supplements or to maintain a proper diet. Also, dehydration is a very serious concern. Excessive diarrhea, as a result of the emptying of the intestines and inadequate absorption of liquids in the large intestines, may lead to dehydration which, in turn, can cause dysfunction of the kidneys or excessive weakness.

A possible treatment to aid in proper vitamin and mineral intake, nutritional support may be utilized. This is the use of a feeding tube through the stomach or small bowel to assure adequate nutrition.

New research is being done in the area of nutritional therapy. The use of fish or flaxseed oils has been shown to decrease inflammation in the digestive tract. The use of probiotics, or good bacteria, has also shown promise in restoring balance to the intestine.

How Can My Doctor Diagnose HPV?

Comments Off

Although human papillomavirus is a common disease, it is often difficult to definitively diagnose. There is no actual blood test for the HPV virus that pinpoints the presence of the disease in an individual.

However, your doctor will be able to recognize some of the health conditions that are associated with HPV, and can often surmise that HPV is the cause. In cases where HPV is causing warts or a simple skin condition, the doctor may be able to isolate evidence of the virus. Unfortunately, in the case of the development of the more serious health issues caused by HPV infection, it may be years after initial infection before either you or your doctor notice any adverse health consequences. This is why it is important to arm yourself with information about this common disease when you become sexually active, and have regular health checks through the years.

HPV Symptoms

There are more than 250 strains of HPV that have been identified at this time. Of these, most are benign and harmless, and many clear up of their own accord. You may never know the virus has taken up residence in your body. About 20 million Americans have a case of common skin warts at any time – the result of HPV infection, but these cases, although unsightly and embarrassing, are not serious and eventually clear up with a doctor’s help. Other strains – specifically Types 6 and 11 – are sexually transmitted diseases that cause genital warts. These are also benign, and although they may be extremely persistent and difficult to control, they won’t do your health serious harm.

However, the few strains that are most harmful are most dangerous because you will often see no symptoms. But these types can lead to cancers of the cervix, anus, vulva, throat and neck. These strains are all sexually transmitted; the sure-fire way to avoid these is abstinence, but practicing safe sex religiously will protect you to a great extent from contracting these strains. There are some simple guidelines:

  • Condoms will protect you, but not 100% of the time.
  • HPV is passed through anal and oral sex, as well as through vaginal.
  • The more partners you have, the higher your chance of catching HPV from someone.
  • If your partner says they don’t have HPV, they are being untruthful; there is no way to know for certain whether they do or not. So safe sex is always a must!
  • HPV can be harmful to men as well as women, especially men who routinely engage in oral sex or anal sex. Gays are particularly at risk statistically.

HPV Treatments

There are vaccines approved for women that protect against the strains of HPV that cause cervical cancer – about 70% of cervical cancers originate with HPV infection. Women should have routine pap smears as soon as they become sexually active, and through the years. Cervical cancer, when found early, is highly treatable, but untreated it can kill. Taking good care of your health can assure that whether or not you have contracted the disease, you will be safe in the long run.

Mesothelioma Treatment Overview

Comments Off

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with asbestos related cancer, or mesothelioma, finding the best treatment becomes a top priority. However, understanding a complex medical condition can be difficult, especially with a rare disease such as mesothelioma. Making matters worse is the relatively low survival rate of patients diagnosed with the disease.

While your cancer treatment decisions should be made under the guidance of a physician familiar with the specific details of your condition, the following can serve as an overview to familiarize yourself with some of the options available.

You have choices in mesothelioma treatment

There are many options for treating mesothelioma, and as research progresses, new treatments are being developed all the time. Here are three of the most commonly used asbestos cancer treatment options and some of the pros and cons of each.

Surgery

Surgery is often the first choice for people with asbestos cancer in its earliest stages as removing the source of the cancer may help with other treatment options. However since asbestos related disease often manifests itself in the lining of the lung cavity, the surgical option can involve the removal of an entire lung or just a portion of the lung. This is a very invasive procedure and can have many types of inherent risks and as such, can be difficult for patients in poor health and is usually reserved for those whose health is stronger.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy was not a popular treatment for mesothelioma because it traditionally could only target specific areas, and asbestos cancer usually does not manifest itself in that way. However, recent advancements have made radiation therapy a more viable option for mesothelioma patients as lasers can be aimed more accurately.

Using a concentrated beam to target cancerous cells, radiation tries to destroy those cells so that the cancer will not spread. Radiation therapy can be used in conjunction with other therapies including surgery.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is another option for asbestos cancer patients, and can be used at all stages of the cancer although it is not curative. Chemotherapy can be used to shrink tumors in preparation for surgery, or after surgery, to attack those diseased cells that were not removed during the procedure.

Recent trials are investigating a different method of delivering the drugs directly to the lungs to improve the effectiveness of this treatment.

While these are three of the most common therapies offered for patients with mesothelioma, they are not a comprehensive list of the available options. New types of treatment including photodynamic therapies, targeted drugs with fewer side effects, and blood testing, are being refined and brought to market. Consult with your mesothelioma specialist to determine the optimal treatment for yourself or your loved ones.

The Difference Between Pleural Plaques and Pleural Thickening

Comments Off

Here is the short version in unsophisticated and unscientific terms: pleural thickening is the result of pleural plaques.

It strongly depends on the level of asbestos exposure what kind of lung disease a person may develop. Frequent and intense contact, stretched over a long period of time usually results in asbestosis, a non cancerous form of an asbestos induced disease.

But if a person’s exposure is rather intermittent and less intense, he is more likely to develop mesothelioma, lung cancer or pleural plaques.

Pleural plaques, though, is not an illness but it is definitely indicative of exposure to asbestos. As a matter of fact, more often than not, it is the only indication of asbestos exposure. It is important to understand the connection between pleural plaques and asbestosis or mesothelioma; if pleural plaques are found in a patient, it does not necessarily mean that he has either one of the aforementioned health conditions. But the opposite constellation is not true. In almost all of the cases, a newly diagnosed asbestosis or mesothelioma patient will have developed pleural plaques.

Pleural plaques consist of a white, fibrous and flexible substance and occur in the form of little nodules. They typically develop in the pleura, also called the outer lining, which is a thin layer surrounding the lungs and other organs in the abdomen. That causes the pleura to expand and this occurrence is called pleural thickening. The nodules have the tendency to calcify which increases their visibility on x-rays of the chest. They can vary in size and shape. Pleural plaques are benign and do not directly cause any symptoms in a patient, other than a slightly impaired lung function.

Typically, the only treatment is to monitor a patient’s situation very closely to see if the pleural plaques develop any further. In very few cases it might be a considerable option to perform a surgery with the goal to remove as much of the fibrotic tissue as possible. However, more recent studies suggest that this form of pleural plaques treatment does not improve the overall situation and is therefore not worth taking the risk that is associated with this rather invasive approach.

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of consulting your doctor and having regular check ups scheduled. If you are concerned that you might have been exposed to asbestos or if you encounter any unusual symptoms, do not waste any time but go and see a health care professional. And I am not just saying that causally, as a matter of fact I like to wrap up this article by demonstrating you the necessity of reacting immediately in such a situation.

A few months back ago, I pass blood in my urine, but didn’t experience any kind of pain at all. I went to see an Urologist right away. Long story short: I was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma, the cancer of the kidney. My left kidney was removed via a laparoscopic radical nephrectomy and fortunately, the cancer was entirely confined to the organ and had not yet spread any further. However, the results could have been vastly different if I had waited any longer.

The author Tony Ulrich was diagnosed with kidney cancer in October of 2009. In his research on what his cancer could have been caused by, he came across with data that suggests a strong link to environmental toxics, such as asbestos.

Drug to Reduce Lung Cancer Tumours in Development

Comments Off

The sad truth is that these days, cancer has become more and more common. We all know of family members or friends that have battled this terrible disease. One of the most serious forms of cancer is lung cancer, which can spread quickly and fiercely. Scientists and doctors are constantly trying to develop new drugs that will combat cancer or slow down its progress. Recently, scientists at the Imperial College London identified a drug that might be able to help reduce the tumours that form when you have advanced lung cancer.

This drug, which is hoping to reach the clinical research trial stage next year, apparently wiped out small cell cancer tumours in half of the mice tested with the medication. One of the most positive outcomes of the research is that the drug blocked the cells capability to resist chemotherapy, a very positive development in these studies.

Lung cancer is a serious illness and the small cell version of this cancer can prove fatal. This advanced cancer makes up only 20% of all cases and diagnosis never leads to a good prognosis, with only 3% of patients surviving more than five years. The Imperial College London hopes that their proven studies will lead to the production of the drug which will result in the testing of the medicine on lung cancer patients.

Chemotherapy is an option for this form of intense lung cancer, but many times the cancer grows back just as fast as it shrinks. Cancer cells can also become resistant to chemotherapy due to a hormone called FGF-2. The new drug that has been developed (known as PD173074) blocks the growth hormone and prevents it from attaching itself to the tumour cells. Scientists and doctors are hoping that this treatment will eventually be available in pill form, helping lung cancer patients with their disease.

The drug was initially developed for different reasons but now further research has shown that this medication could have more than one function for people with lung cancer. However, development is far from complete and researchers are hoping to advance swiftly in the next year when it will be taken to clinical trials.

Recent studies for the drug that will treat lung cancer show that there is constant research being done in this field and hopefully these investigations will not stop. The already impressive results so far means that even more effort will go into the development of this drug in the future.

Inflammation Diseases Can Be Helped By Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Comments Off

If you are like me you may not have known that research is now showing that all diseases are related or connected to chronic-inflammation. Your body’s immune system fights disease or infection causing inflammation, but when the swelling and irritation does not stop and can continue and become chronic, this leads to inflammation diseases, which include heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer.

Now, unlike a sore throat where you feel the inflamed tissues in the form of pain or discomfort, chronic-inflammation can affect your organs and you won’t feel it. You will see heart disease called “The Silent Killer” because you do not feel it attacking your heart.

Your diet and how much you exercise can play an important role in preventing inflammation diseases like cardiovascular disease. The foods you consume can impact your levels of i. Your doctor can perform what’s called a C-Reactive Protein test which measures your inflammation-levels so you can determine your level of danger.

Eating “healthy” by eating spinach, olive oil, walnuts and fish in a regular basis is healthy because of vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids that are found within these kinds of food. Research shows these omega 3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect on your body so you run less risk of developing any of the chronic-inflammation diseases. It also is a major building block in brain development since 75% of your brain made of omega 3 fatty acids. Research also shows fish oil fatty acids break up clots before they can cause any damage which will help protect you from heart attack and strokes.

You may also consider fish oil supplements which can be very high in omega 3 fatty acids which have been shown in research studies to act as an anti-inflammatory, thereby reducing your risk of cardiovascular disease and other diseases. Omega 3 fish oil fatty acids, particularly EPA, have a very positive effect on your inflammatory response. By helping the body produce anti-inflammatory eicosanoids Omega 3 fatty acids help your body regulate it’s inflammation cycle, which prevents and relieves painful conditions and disease. For adults, fish oil supplements with omega 3 improve memory, recall, reasoning as well as focus and concentration.

If you are interested in learning more about how omega 3 fish oil supplements can protect you from inflammation diseases, please visit my website, where I share with you what products I am personally using and recommend.

Things You Need to Know About Mesothelioma

Comments Off

Have you ever wondered what is mesothelioma? Do you know what causes mesothelioma? Do you know what the different types of mesothelioma cells are? Are you finding out what are the different types of mesothelioma? The following article will give you the answers to the questions mentioned above.

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is found in the lining of the chest and lung, the abdomen or the sac-like space around the heart.

There are basically 3 main types of mesothelioma cells. The first mesothelioma cell is epithelioid cells. This is the most frequent type as about 50 to 70% of mesothelioma are of this type. It affects the surrounding of internal organs and internal surfaces in the body. The second type of mesothelioma cells is known as sarcomatoid cells. This cell is much rarer, which makes up about 7 to 20% of mesothelioma. The last type of mesothelioma cells is the mixed or biphasic cells. This is the combination of first two types and it makes up about 20 to 35%.

This type of disease is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Most people with this disease have worked on jobs where they breathe in asbestos fibers. For example, factory workers, repair workers, construction workers, asbestos miners and many others. Family members of people exposing to asbestos at work are also at an increased risk of contracting mesothelioma. This is mainly because asbestos fibers can be carried home by clothes, shoes, skins and hair of these workers and can be inhaled by others.

In addition, there are also three different types of mesothelioma:

#1- Pleural Mesothelioma

This is the most common form of mesothelioma which affects the Pleural surrounding the lungs.

#2- Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the thin cell membrane called the peritoneum and it surrounds the gastrointestinal tract and provides lubrication for the stomach and intestines so that it can function properly.

#3- Pericardial Mesothelioma

Pericardial Mesothelioma is one of the rarest types of mesothelioma which affects that pericardium. It is usually caused by an extended amount of exposure asbestos.

Although there are different types of mesothelioma, the treatment options are essentially the same for all types. However, the symptoms of the different types of mesothelioma are different. Therefore, the best way to prevent yourself and your family members from contracting with mesothelioma is to decrease one’s exposure to asbestos in the workplace, at home and in the environment.

What is Pleural Mesothelioma and How it Affects Us?

Comments Off

Mesothelioma is a cancer that is a result of asbestos exposure. Pleural (also referred to as ‘pleura’) Mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs. When the cancer develops in other cavities and organ linings of a persons’ body, it is then referred to as another form of mesothelioma; usually named by the type of organ cavity or lining it affects. However, Pleural Mesothelioma is the most common form of cancer affecting nearly 75% or more of all Mesothelioma patients.

About the Pleural

The pleural layers consists of two individual layers each providing protection for the lungs and chest cavity, in their own unique manner. These linings also support the lungs within the cavity of the chest.

The Parietal Layer is the outer most layer of the pleura cavity and is held to the chest wall and to the diaphragm by connective tissue (one of the most important forms of connective tissues in the human body) and is also connected to the pericardium, which is the fluid filled sac that protects and supports the heart in chest cavity. Essentially, the Parietal Pleura is connected to the thoracic cavity and stimulated by the intercostal nerves (the anterior (frontal) part of the thoracic spinal nerves from T1 to T11.) [These are the spinal nerves that emerge from the thoracic spinal nerves.]

The inner layer, referred to as the Visceral (or ‘pulmonary’) Pleura Layer covers the actual surface of the lungs closely and is connected to the entire surface of the lungs. This layer of the pleura is somewhat moist and gives the lungs a soft and smooth surface to allow for free movement within the outer layer (The Parietal lining).

Linking the Parietal and the Visceral Layers is the intrapleural space.

The intrapleural space is an area containing fluids that are provided by membranes. These fluids permit the parietal and visceral layers to move against each other during respiration as the lungs inflate and deflate, continuously.
